Most of the current selection processes of a project manager in the Engineering projects do not use a standard criteria on which the selection can be done .
Moreover, during most of the interviews with the candidates for the job of a project manager the interviewers do not use a structured interview guide.
In addition, the interviewers do not use an effective technique of interviewing the candidates for the job of a project manager.
Most of the current training programs of a project manager in the engineering projects do not consider the rules of adult training and do not cover all the required knowledge and skills of the project manager.
1.2 Research Importance
The importance of this study is shown in the following Points:
1. Setting standard criteria for selection of a project manager can help to improve the selection process and this can lead to a qualified project Manager and better results of the projects.
2. The job analysis of a project Manager will help to determine the Gap analysis between the existing performance and the desired performance of a project Manager and this will enhance the training process.
3. The job analysis can be a base for future studies to improve the quality of the project Manager job or redesign the job.
1.3 Research Objectives
The main objectives of this study are:
1. Setting criteria on which the selection of a project Manager can be done.
2. Recommending an effective technique for interviewing the candidates of a project Manager Job.
3. Creating an interview Guide to be used during the selection process.
4. Illustrating the importance and the rules of adult training as a recommend way for training a project Manager.
1.4 Research Strategy
This research strategy is applying the following approaches in order to achieve these research objectives.
1. The fundamentals of Human Resource Management & Project Management.
2. The practical and widely used methods and techniques in the field of job analysis, interviews, and training.
3. The best practices applied by national (Egypt) and international project Managers.
1.5 Thesis Organization
This research consists of 6 chapters as follows:
Chapter 1: Introduction
It is an introduction in which this research objectives, importance, and strategy has been mentioned.
Chapter 2: The nature of job analysis
This chapter includes the definition of job analysis and the methods used in job analysis. The advantages and disadvantages of those methods are also included.
Chapter 3: Methodology of a project manager's job analysis
Analyzing the project manager's job by using DACUM (Developing A Curriculum) as follows:
1. Selecting 12 project Managers who represent different branches (civil Engineering, mechanical Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, electrical Engineering, and Information technology).
2. Conducting a DACUM workshop in which the previous panel of 12 project Managers determine the duties and their tasks including general knowledge and skills.
